Don’t despair, that ache is telling you something

When our children are hurting, something deep inside a parent aches. We may not know why they are hurting, the severity of it, whether it is rational or not, but we know something is not right. I have felt this pain many times as a parent myself, and each time I come to learn, sometimes too late, that my hunch was correct.

Parents usually find me when they can no longer ignore this soul ache. They know something is amiss, but they do not have the vocabulary, experience or knowledge to identify it. Every time I consult with a new parent, I learn their hunch was right.

I don’t say this to villainize your child’s school, but rather often the school staff are too close to the problem to see it. As the old adage goes, they cannot see the forest for the trees. And as time marches forward, your child is being left behind, under supported or mis-supported.

I am here to say, you aren’t imagining things, you know when something is off. What the last seven years walking alongside families has taught me is that you know your child and you know what they need. What you may not know is how to get that for your child, or what it looks like in school.

My hope is that after our work together concludes, you will have the confidence and knowledge to be a better school advocate for your child. The school will better understand your child and their needs. The team (which includes you) will work together to reach and teach your child. And I will have worked myself out of a job.
